Amsterdam is filled with beautiful, historical buildings. For residents of these monuments, the installation of fiber internet often seems like an impossible task. Drilling into protected facades or pulling cables along historical staircases is strictly regulated. However, a connection is certainly possible, provided the correct procedures are followed.
For all work on a monumental building (both national and municipal monuments), the Amsterdam Heritage Ordinance is the leading regulation. In practice, this means that network operators (such as KPN or ODF) are never allowed to drill into facades without careful consideration. Often, 'invisible' entrances are used, such as via existing utility routes in the basement, to avoid affecting the historical value of the building.
As soon as an address is registered as a monument, the network operator will first have to carry out a mandatory feasibility study. By law, this may take a maximum of 15 working days. During this inspection, it is assessed whether the installation is physically and legally possible without damaging the property.
When cables must be laid visibly (on the wall), Monument Preservation often demands aesthetic adjustments. In practice, we see that telecom parties must agree to the use of color-sprayed cable trays that blend seamlessly into the historical interior or facade. Without these commitments, a permit is simply not granted.
In some cases, modifications for sustainability and modernization (which the installation of infrastructure may fall under) may be eligible for municipal subsidies for monuments. It is advisable to inquire about this with the district or the Monuments & Archaeology (MenA) department of the municipality of Amsterdam.
Operating a company or agency from a registered monument? Because facade drilling is prohibited and municipal feasibility studies take time, businesses often rely on temporary cable or 4G/5G failover solutions during rollout.
