Fiber Internet in Amsterdam Oost: Old and New Side by Side

Last updated:

Network: Mixed (KPN & ODF)

The Oost district is a clear example of contrasts. On the one hand, there are modern newly built residential areas on IJburg and the Zeeburgereiland, and on the other hand, the historic buildings in the Watergraafsmeer and the Indische Buurt. This contrast is visible in the availability of fiber internet.

IJburg and Zeeburgereiland: Ready for the future

Residents of new housing developments in Oost are well-positioned. During the construction of IJburg and the development of the Zeeburgereiland, fiber optic cables were often laid in the ground directly.

As a result, speeds (up to 4 or even 8 Gbps) are easily achievable via the KPN network or ODF. However, residents on IJburg sometimes report that while the fiber connection to the meter cupboard is stable, the supplied Wi-Fi routers (such as the Zyxel T-54) are not always sufficient to transmit a strong signal throughout the new-build homes.

Highlighted neighborhoods in Oost

Watergraafsmeer, Indische Buurt, and the Dapperbuurt

In the older parts of Oost, the rollout of fiber optics required more effort. For many streets, the network has now been successfully installed (homes passed), but not every individual home is connected to a modem yet (homes activated).

Do you live in a divided building with downstairs neighbors? In Amsterdam Oost, connections are often located in shared meter cupboards or riser pipes. Is the downstairs neighbor not cooperating with the installation? Read here what your rights are and download our template letters.
