Network: GlasDraadThe rural area of Amsterdam, known as Landelijk Noord (including villages such as Zunderdorp, Ransdorp, Holysloot, and Durgerdam), has a distinct fiber internet situation. While providers in the city center typically install connections without direct initial fees, installation in rural areas requires more resources due to the distances between properties.
To provide modern internet infrastructure to the residents of Landelijk Noord, GlasDraad manages the deployment here. Because of the required distances, GlasDraad uses a network fee model. This is a mandatory contribution to cover the excavation work required in the rural area.
GlasDraad offers two options to pay the network fee:
| Option | Network costs (GlasDraad) | Subscription costs (Provider) |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Monthly | € 15.31 per month | E.g. € 45.00 per month |
| 2. One-time buyout | € 1,849.49 one-time | E.g. € 45.00 per month |
* Amounts are indicative and depend on your exact address and provider choice. The buyout option is more cost-effective over the long term (after approximately 10 years).
GlasDraad uses a model based on demand aggregation. The excavation work begins only when a specified percentage of residents in an area commits to a connection. Public information indicates that this process was completed in Landelijk Noord. In cooperation with local village councils, the required threshold (40% participation) was met in 2021 for villages such as Durgerdam, Zunderdorp, Ransdorp, and Holysloot. [Source: GlasDraad]
According to feedback from residents, the installation was conducted with consideration for local conditions. Due to the long driveways, dikes, and water-rich plots, underground drilling was often used instead of open trenches. Despite the financial requirements, the general response in shared experiences has been positive, partly because these areas were not previously covered by traditional urban providers.
The GlasDraad network is an open network. There is a choice of over 18 different providers. Because Glaspoort (KPN's joint venture) recently acquired a 50% stake in GlasDraad, almost all major national providers (such as KPN, Odido, Budget Thuis, and Youfone) are now available on this network, alongside a few local and niche providers.
If you do not register during the initial installation phase and decide to connect after the closing date, GlasDraad typically charges a one-time late fee of € 250.00 on top of the regular network fee. If you decide to connect years later, the connection costs will be higher because the street and berm will need to be reopened specifically for your property.
Because the fiber network varies by neighborhood, you can find the current prices of the providers that are active in your specific postal code area here.
